Methodology

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and viral culture. Samples are forwarded to Monogram Biosciences® for testing, reporting, and billing.

Result Turnaround Time

33 - 41 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Use

Trofile® Select allows for the determination of HIV-1 coreceptor tropism status, by which the appropriate assay, Trofile® or Trofile® DNA, is selected through an initial prescreening viral assessment. The coreceptor tropism status may be used to determine eligibility for CCR5 antagonist therapy, such as maraviroc (Selzentry®).

Special Instructions

Both frozen plasma and frozen whole blood are required for this profile. If both samples are not received, the order for the assay will be cancelled.

Limitations

This procedure should be used only for patients with documented HIV-1 infection.

Plasma: Lavender-top (EDTA); Whole blood: Lavender-top (EDTA)

Collection Instructions

Both frozen plasma and frozen whole blood are required for this profile. Draw four lavender-top (EDTA) tubes. Do not use green-top (heparin) tubes. Plasma: Centrifuge three tubes within six hours of collection. Remove plasma, transfer plasma to screw-cap polypropylene transport tubes (not "pop-top" or "snap-cap"), and freeze. Ship specimen frozen. Whole blood: Do not centrifuge. Freeze tube immediately after draw. Ship specimen frozen. To avoid delays in turnaround time, when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
