Sometimes success isn’t about the pieces that you have at your disposal, but rather it comes from how these pieces connect to each other, transforming a process and leading to a better outcome.
As clinical trials evolve to more patient-centric models, mobile clinical services are becoming a more integral part of the emerging patient-first paradigm. Delivery of decentralized services, which include mobile nursing, home biologic sample collections, training on equipment use and protocol compliance just to name a few, depends on smooth coordination between the sponsor, CRO, sites, central lab, and the mobile clinicians. But we’ve found that we can’t just plug these services into a trial and call the process complete.
The old paradigm of using paper for source data collection comes with many inherent problems: it’s slow; there is the potential for data loss or improper transcribing of data, and it is impossible to monitor compliance in real-time. Switching to a fully-digital workflow including digital capture of source data addresses these issues while also improving study efficiency and promoting tighter connections between patients, the sites, and mobile clinicians. In the new digital workflow model, PIs are able to easily order and monitor the conduct of mobile clinical visits, with a highly transparent view to the services ordered, the status of the orders, all via a unified dashboard. Ultimately, the switch to digital will deliver a better experience for all stakeholders.
While essentially all DCTs leverage some sort of technology platform, and many use mobile clinical services to some extent, fully integrating these two functions is what we think will really be transformative for the DCT model.
