Test Details

Methodology

Inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)

Result Turnaround Time

3 - 7 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Use

Evaluate exposure to arsenic.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Serum or plasma

Volume

2 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Container

Royal blue-top (EDTA) metal-free tube

Collection Instructions

Serum or plasma should be separated from cells within two hours of venipuncture. Submit serum or plasma in a metal-free transport tube.

Reference Range

Physiologic arsenic concentrations in unexposed individuals are usually <10 ng/mL; however, the total arsenic concentration may be markedly increased after dietary consumption of seafood.

Storage Instructions

Submission/transport (<3 days): Room temperature. For storage beyond three days, specimen should be refrigerated or frozen.
