Result Turnaround Time

5 - 9 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT); anticardiolipin antibodies IgA, IgG, IgM; antiphosphatidylserine, IgG, IgM; antithrombin activity; APTT mixing studies; β2-glycoprotein I, IgA, IgG, IgM; dRVVT; factor II gene mutation; factor V Leiden; factor XIII activity; hexagonal phospholipid neutralization; homocysteine; lupus anticoagulant interpretation; plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity; protein C activity (chromogenic); protein S antigen, free

Special Instructions

Informed consent is required for New York patients. If abnormal, aPTT will reflex to immediate aPTT mixing studies. If reflex test is performed, additional charges/CPT code(s) may apply.

Limitations

This procedure may be considered by Medicare and other carriers as investigational and, therefore, may not be payable as a covered benefit for patients.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Serum, plasma, and whole blood

Volume

Five 1-mL tubes of platelet-poor frozen citrated plasma and 5 mL whole blood and 2 mL frozen serum

Container

Blue-top (sodium citrate) tube citrated platelet-free plasma and lavender-top (EDTA) tube or yellow-top (ACD) tube and red-top tube or gel-barrier tube.

Collection Instructions

Plasma/serum must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture and plasma centrifuged a second time before being placed in plastic transport tubes. Freeze within two hours and keep frozen until testing is performed.

Storage Instructions

Freeze plasma or serum. Maintain whole blood at room temperature; stable for seven days.

Causes for Rejection

Noncitrated plasma; gross homolysis; presence of fibrin; clotted plasma; clotted whole blood samples if adequate DNA not obtained; frozen whole blood
