Lateral flow immunochromographic assay
Result Turnaround Time
1 - 3 days
Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
Test Includes
Reflex to titer on positive; reflex to culture when criterion is met.
Use
Aid in establishing the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii infection.
Special Instructions
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens will have a fungus culture performed when antigen-positive (per CAP regulations), if it is not requested separately.
Limitations
Endpoint titers may not correlate between different methods of cryptococcal antigen testing. Patients with positive cryptococcal antigen results, therefore, should be monitored using the same assay.

Causes for Rejection
Quantity not sufficient for analysis; hemolysis; lipemia; gross bacterial contamination; inadequate labeling; specimen received after prolonged delay (usually >72 hours); inappropriate transport device
