Immunochromatographic membrane assay; bacterial culture when criterion is met.
Result Turnaround Time
2 - 3 days
Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
Use
Detects S pneumoniae in the urine of patients with S pneumoniae and in the CSF of patients with meningitidis.
Special Instructions
A body fluid culture will be performed if not initially requested for S pneumoniae for antigen-negative CSF specimens (per the College of American Pathologists [CAP] guidelines)
Limitations
Testing is not recommended for persons who have received the Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine within the previous five days (false-positive reaction). The accuracy in urine has not been proven in young children.

Storage Instructions
Refrigerate. If specimen is not tested within seven days, freeze at -20ºC or below.
Causes for Rejection
Quantity not sufficient for analysis; inappropriate specimen source; inappropriate specimen collection device; specimen stability exceeded; name discrepancy between the name on the specimen container and the name in the computer or on the test request form
