Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Result Turnaround Time

4 - 5 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Use

This test is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Throat/nasopharyngeal (NP) swab, bronchoalveolar (BAL)/bronchial wash/aspirate, NP wash/aspirate, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Volume

One swab (in universal transport medium) or 0.5 mL BAL/bronchial wash/aspirate, NP wash/aspirate, or CSF

Minimum Volume

One swab (in universal transport media) or 0.2 mL BAL/ bronchial wash/aspirate, NP wash/aspirate, or CSF (Note: This volume does not allow for repeat testing.)

Container

Universal transport medium (swab) or sterile container (BAL/bronchial wash/aspirate, NP wash/aspirate, CSF)

Collection Instructions

To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

Storage Instructions

BAL/wash/aspirates and swabs are stable at room temperature, refrigerated, or frozen for seven days. CSF is stable at room temperature or refrigerated for seven days and frozen for 90 days.

Causes for Rejection

Quantity not sufficient for analysis; gross specimen contamination; specimen too old; leaking or broken tube
