Methodology

Culture of cells in special medium; colcemid arrest of cells in prometaphase stage of mitosis following cell synchronization techniques

Result Turnaround Time

10 - 15 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Test Includes

20 prophase to prometaphase cells are studied following cell synchronization. Two cells are karyotyped with the highest resolution.

Use

Detect small chromosome abnormalities not detectable using routine methods; precise identification of abnormal chromosomes previously detected by routine methods

Special Instructions

Pertinent medical findings must accompany request for chromosome analysis.

Collection Instructions

Using sterile technique, collect 5 mL of blood into a green-top (sodium heparin) tube or syringe. Invert the tube several times to prevent coagulation. Specimens should be sent the same day as collected. Use of improper anticoagulant and/or frozen specimen cannot be processed.

Using sterile technique, collect 10 mL of blood into a sodium heparin tube or syringe. Invert the tube several times to prevent coagulation. Specimens must be sent the same day as collected and arrive in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection.

Storage Instructions

Specimen should be delivered immediately. Maintain specimen at room temperature. Specimen may be refrigerated if there is a delay in shipment. Do not freeze.

Causes for Rejection

Upon receipt, suitability of specimen will be determined by the Cytogenetics laboratory.
