Test Includes

Titer of the patient's serum against type O blood cells at 2°C to 8°C

Use

Detection of the presence of cold agglutinins in patients with suspected cold agglutinin disease

Special Instructions

This test is not specific for Mycoplasma pneumoniae. For diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections, see Mycoplasma pneumoniae Antibodies, IgG, IgM [163758].

Limitations

False-negative results may occur if the sample is refrigerated prior to the separation of the serum from the red blood cells. This test is not a direct measure of the clinical significance of the cold agglutinin and must be used in conjunction with the patient’s clinical presentation and other laboratory values. Normal individuals may have low levels of cold agglutinins that have no clinical significance.
