Metanephrines, Pheochromocytoma Evaluation

CPT 82570; 83835
Synonyms
  • Metanephrines, Random Urine
  • Pheochromocytoma Evaluation

Test Details

Methodology

Metanephrines: liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS); creatinine: alkaline picric acid

Result Turnaround Time

3 - 7 days

Turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.

Test Includes

Creatinine; normetanephrine; metanephrine; metanephrine:creatinine ratio

Use

Diagnose the presence of a pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroblastoma

Limitations

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by LabCorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Custom Additional Information

Simultaneous measurement of urine creatinine permits expression of the metanephrine:creatinine ratio. Some clinicians use >2.2 μg metanephrines/mg creatinine to distinguish pheochromocytoma from normal with this ratio.1

Specimen Requirements

Specimen

Urine (first morning)

Volume

10 mL

Minimum Volume

2.5 mL (Note: This volume does not allow for repeat testing.)

Container

Random urine transport tube with no preservative or 6N HCl

Collection Instructions

Collect urine and transfer to a random urine transport tube.

Stability Requirements

Temperature

Period

Room temperature

7 days

Refrigerated

Patient Preparation

Medication and dietary monitoring. A number of drugs act through catecholamine mechanisms and must be discontinued 72 hours before and during collection. Bananas, pineapple, and plums are contraindicated.
