Analysis of historical control locomotor activity data from vehicle control groups in adult rats

March 19, 2023
SOT 2023 -- Locomotor activity is used in general toxicology as well as developmental and reproductive toxicology studies to assess neurobehavioral and/or neuromuscular changes caused by test material administration. The Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines require locomotor activity as an endpoint for 28-day and/or 90-day repeat dosing studies, neurotoxicity (acute or repeat) studies and repeat dose reproductive and developmental toxicity studies. Although not required, locomotor activity is also used as a safety assessment endpoint in preclinical pharmaceutical toxicology studies. As a result, locomotor activity data plays a role in assessing the toxicity of test materials on a wide variety of studies.
